Leiden University College The Hague will be launched in September 2010

Leiden University College The Hague will be launched in September 2010. Leiden University College The Hague will provide a three year Liberal Arts & Sciences programme in English for a selected group of excellent and highly motivated students from around the world.

This interdisciplinary Liberal Arts & Sciences programme, entitled ‘Global Challenges’,  focuses on Peace & Justice and Sustainability. The programme links up perfectly with the international profile of The Hague as ‘City of Peace, Justice and Security’ and with the expertise of Leiden University in International Law, World Politics, and Governance.

An essential component of the Liberal Arts & Sciences philosophy is the residential element. The international composition of Leiden University College The Hague fully immerses the student in a multi-cultural community, and all the pleasures and challenges that come with it.

The new University College will provide a challenging academic education and prepare students for prominent positions in international society.

Leiden University College The Hague has been established in close cooperation and with substantial support from the City of The Hague and will be one of the pillars of Campus The Hague. The City administration has provided €12 million for permanent accommodation. This was absolutely essential for the realisation of the University College.

Campus The Hague is the official branch of Leiden University and will be further developed in the coming years under the leadership of Professor Dr. Jouke de Vries.

Sander Dekker, the Alderman who is responsible for education, emphasises that: “the various international institutes in The Hague such as the International Criminal Court, The Peace Palace and the numerous Embassies coupled with the presence of an international expat community create a unique teaching and research laboratory. A University College which specialises in Peace and Justice definitely belongs in The Hague”.

Excellence

The start of Leiden University College The Hague completes a number of initiatives by Leiden University to promote excellence. In addition to the new University College, Leiden University has already established the successful Pre University College which presents opportunities for talented secondary school pupils while Honours Classes offer challenging additional programmes for regular students. For this coherent approach Leiden University was recently rewarded with a subsidy of €4 million from the so-called Sirius programme.

Leiden University College The Hague will admit 125 students next year. In future this number will be raised to 200 students per academic year.
