LUC Committees raise funds for Serious Request!
This week the city of Leiden hosts 3FM’s “Glazen Huis”, which is an annual fundraising event with this year’s theme “This One’s For Mama”: the money raised will help to provide healthcare, food and shelter to mothers in warzones.
Like many other faculties and student associations of Leiden University, LUC’s various committees and Fortuna (LUC Student Association) decided to contribute to this cause and organized various activities to raise money. LUC’s Serious Request Committee has organized three activities on the LUC campus, starting with a Movie Night Kick-Off on the 6th of December. The movie committee showed the film “Turtles can Fly” about mothers in war zones, and Hot Chocolate and Glühwein was sold. With about 30 people joining this first event, we already raised more than € 70 on the first evening. A good begin to start with!
On the night after the Kick-Off at the 8th of December, all LUC students had the possibility to sign up for a Dutch Take-Away dinner, consisting of snert (Dutch pea soup) with rye bread and bacon. With this second night full of Dutch winter habits, the amount raised was doubled to more than € 160! Additional events to support the fundraising at LUC were also organized and a huge success: whose ears have not been blessed by the voices of the two-headed choir consisting of Pieter Goethart and Jake van Geyser, bringing vocal Christmas wishes in the corridors of the student housing? Of course these were not for free, and with two days singing a substantial amount of money could be added to the money raised.
The final and third fundraising event was a gourmet, organized on the final Thursday of the block. With 8 gourmet sets, some Christmas music and plenty of wine & food, the common room of De Klok was ready to host the 42 participants for dinner. And because we had reached the minimum set amount of € 250, Thomas, Cissie and Jay (members of the LUC Faculty) joined us for the gourmet as well: fully dressed up as respectively Santa Claus, its angel and reindeer. Together with the good atmosphere, food & Serious Request Bingo, the dinner can be called a success: it brought the total amount of money raised to € 641,36!
On Wednesday the 21st of December, a delegation of students has brought the raised amount in clinging cash to the Glazen Huis in Leiden to donate the money personally. Under vocal accompaniment by Marco Borsato we stood in a huge line to reach the mailbox to squeeze all the bags with cash through the mailbox slot. We are really happy as we have realized collecting this amazing amount of money with our college, and would like to thank all students and staff who participated and donated willingly the previous three weeks.
Happy Christmas!
