College Organisation

LUC The Hague is comprised of many dedicated staff and motivated students, each of whom contribute something unique to the college’s profile and to the experience of being part of its community.

LUC The Hague is the international honours college of Leiden University, based in the Faculty of Campus Den Haag. It is connected to these two bodies via participation in the university’s honours college (the Dean of LUC sits on the Honours Council in Leiden), by LUC’s Academic Advisory Board (which is composed of senior members of the other Faculties in Leiden and is chaired by the Dean of LUC), and by the Faculty Board of Campus Den Haag (on which sits the Dean of LUC).

The Dean is responsible for the academic leadership of LUC The Hague. He is assisted in servicing that responsibility by a team of academic and support staff, and of course by the students. As a college, all members of LUC share in responsibility for its success.

At the level of management, the Dean can rely on the Managing Director (who is responsible for Money, Marketing and general Management – M3), the two Directors of Studies (who are responsible for educational practice and quality control in the programme), and the Senior Tutor (who is responsible for the tutorial system). The management meets with the Dean each week in the Executive Board.

At the level of implementation, the management of the college relies on a series of committees. For issues related to the content and development of the programme at LUC, the Board of Studies is the vital organ. For more technical questions of quality control and assessment in the programme, the Examination Committee is responsible. For matters related to academic student welfare and tutorial practice, the Tutorial Council is in charge. The Staff-Student Committee serves as a formal interface between the concerns of the faculty and students of LUC – it performs evaluations of classes and the programme and issues advice to the Dean. Finally, working on issues of the organisation, recruitment, communication and management of the college, we have the Support Team.

There are a number of other organs in LUC, such as the College Assembly, which brings together all members of the college at least once per semester for discussion and information sharing, and some of the committees have sub-committees: the Admissions Committee, for instance, is formally responsible to the Examination Committee.
